چکیده

The phase-separation dynamics of a ternary mixture ~A, B and C! coupled with a reversible chemical reaction between the two constituents A and B is presented. It is demonstrated that the free-energy functional form of time-dependent-Ginzburg-Landau equation describing the phase-separation dynamics of the ternary mixture coupled with a reversible chemical reaction is similar to that of the mixture composed of a block copolymer and a homopolymer. Our simulation study reveals that for the case of equal forward and backward reaction rates, the lamellar thickness scales with the reaction rate constant as a single power law lL;G , regardless of high or low reaction rate regimes. This study sheds insight to the unique features of the involvement of chemical reaction in the phase separation of the ternary mixture. If chemical reaction and phase separation take place simultaneously, the different pattern evolutions at high and low reaction rate constants are originated from the balance between the domain coarsening due to phase separation and the breakup of the continuous phase due to the chemical conversion. The different pattern evolution at high and low reaction rate constants when chemical reaction lags behind phase separation can be interpreted in terms of the discrepancy between the domain sizes at the time step immediately before the turning on of the chemical reaction and the inherent lamellar thickness. It is also pointed out that the crossover of the ternary mixture from one phase region to another, due to the concentration change between A and B, might generate interesting steady-state domain patterns. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1425820#

Five-Zone Simulating Moving Bed for Ternary Separation

Five-zone Simulating Moving Bed (SMB) system, designed for ternary separation, is a modified form of standard four-zone SMB which is only effective in binary separation. It was reported in literature that the five-zone SMB separates the extract-II stream with a lower purity value than that of raffinate and extract-I streams. To address this issue, five zone SMB was designed, using safety ma...

Unsteady-state Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling of Hydrogen Separation from H2/N2 Mixture

3D modeling of Pd/α-Al2O3 hollow fiber membrane by using computational fluid dynamic for hydrogen separation from H2/N2 mixture was considered in steady and unsteady states by using the concept of characteristic time. Characteristic time concept could help us to design and calculate surface to volume ratio and membrane thickness, and adjust the feed conditions. The contribution of resistance be...

Modeling of esterification in a batch reactor coupled with pervaporation for production of ethyl acetate catalyzed by ion- exchange resins

In the chemical industry, process intensification is needed to meet important goals such as sustainable and eco-friendly processes. For esterification reaction the “produce more with less pollution” objective can be achieved by coupling reaction and separation in a so called integrated process. In this work a model for describing the esterification reaction of ethyl acetate in pervaporation mem...

Pressure-Responsive, Surfactant-Free CO2-Based Nanostructured Fluids

Microemulsions are extensively used in advanced material and chemical processing. However, considerable amounts of surfactant are needed for their formulation, which is a drawback due to both economic and ecological reasons. Here, we describe the nanostructuration of recently discovered surfactant-free, carbon dioxide (CO2)-based microemulsion-like systems in a water/organic-solvent/CO2 pressur...

CFD simulation for segregation behavior of a ternary mixture in a bubbling fluidized bed: effect of solid wall boundary condition

Abstract The effect of the solid–wall boundary condition on the segregation behavior of a sand ternary mixture differing in size but having the same proportion has been investigated in a gas–solid bubbling fluidized bed. A multi-fluid computational fluid dynamics model incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow has been used. The mass fraction profiles of the different-sized partic...
